Treasure hunting involves finding treasure maps and then locating the buried treasure. In order to see where the treasure is you will first need to decode the treasure map. To do that you need the cartography skill. Once you have sufficient skill to decode you'll need sufficient lockpicking skill and remove trap skill. There are several different levels of treasure maps.

Level Name Lock picking skill
1 Stash 5.0
2 Supply 45.0
3 Cache 75.0
4 Horde 80.0
5 Trove 80.0

Each treasure map will have specific guardians that will spawn once the chest is fully out of the ground. These guardians will need to be defeated before you can do anything with the chest. The guardians that spawn will be from one of six different spawn groups. The spawn group that the guardians come from will be randomly generated when the treasure map is looted. The guardians will be harder scale in difficulty based on the level of chest. So you shouldn't find an ancient wyrm as a guardian for a level one chest.
